iPhone 8 to feature a Smart Connector for adding VR/AR accessories

A recent blog post by The Verifier claims that the new Apple iPhone will come with a Smart Connector. This Smart Connector will let the users add VR/AR accessories and induction (wireless) charging modules to the iPhone 8.

Currently, the only Apple product to use the Smart Connector feature is the iPad Pro line. The iPad uses the Smart Connector to connect with the external keyboard. It transfers both data and power between iPad Pro and the Smart Keyboard, no batteries or charging required.

The Smart Connector on the iPhone 8 will serve a much bigger purpose. Apple has already talked about Augmented Reality being the future of smartphone technology. According to the source, this connector will bring the AR and VR functionality to the iPhone by using the additional peripherals.

The iPad Pro has already shown us that the Smart Connector is well capable bidirectional power and data transferring. Apple is already aiming for a completely port less iPhone, they have got both the technology and ‘courage’ which indicates there are chances the new iPhone will only feature a single Smart Connector, ditching the iconic lightning port.

This is not the first time we heard about Apple bringing the Smart Connector to the iPhones. Same thing happens last year with the iPhone 7. Ironically instead of getting a new connector, we lost one.

Stay tuned for the updates.
