Apple’s brave idea of removing the headphone jack from a flagship smartphone Kickstarted a new era of dongle life . When almost all the market leaders are trying to kill it by launching their products without the headphone jack, Microsoft seems to have a plan to save our beloved accessory.
Microsoft has been granted a patent for an expanding audio port, which might save the 3.5mm headphone jack from its extinction. The idea here is very simple, put a stretchable port in the devices instead of fitting a fully fledged 3.5 mm audio plug. During the time of use the port will expand enough to fit a required portion of the male headphone jack and will stretch back to its original form once you are done using it.
Microsoft has suggested three ways of doing it. This can be achieved by either using a single sided or two sided stretchable plug. Check the details in the following diagrams,
Let’s hope the smartphone manufacturers find this as a potential method and we can finally have our 3.5mm headphone jack back.
Stay tuned for the updates.
